Land Management Ranger Lead

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, coordinates patrol activities as crew lead of Land Management Rangers to monitor unauthorized activities and assist with other land management actions to safeguard the Balcones Canyonland Preserves and Water Quality Protection Lands. 

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Leads and performs ranger patrol activities for vast areas of environmentally-sensitive land to prevent trespassing, vandalism, illegal dumping, and other unauthorized use of protected lands.
  2. Acts as the primary liaison with City, County, and State law enforcement agencies individuals engaged in unauthorized activities. on Balcones Canyonland Preserves and Water Quality Protection Lands.
  3. Acts as primary liaison with adjacent landowners to educate them about the importance of the land and to curtail all unauthorized activities.
  4. Resolves difficult situations involving citizen complaints, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide seamless customer service.
  5. Recommends procedures and policies to deter trespassers and littering.
  6. Implements actions to manage populations of native and exotic wildlife on the wild lands.
  7. Conducts inventory and monitoring practices for wildlife populations and their habitats.
  8. Operates and maintains firearms used for lethal population management actions for wildlife.
  9. Observes and documents maintenance needs for facilities including fences, roads, buildings, water wells, and other facilities.
  10. Gathers and organizes reports for submission to supervisor; and prepares reports and programmatic documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of City safety rules, regulations, laws, ordinances, and municipal codes.
  • Knowledge of biology and land preservation.
  • Knowledge of wildlife and habitat, especially white-tail deer and hogs.
  • Knowledge of vegetation, other plant life, and local plant species.
  • Knowledge of Local, State, and Federal environmental laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of firearms and ability to safely demonstrate shooting ability.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to operate various tools and equipment needed to accomplish land maintenance activities.
  • Ability to identify and track wildlife.
  • Ability to work with other agencies.
  • Ability to locate and identifying wildlife.
  • Ability to hunt and harvest wildlife.
  • Ability to deal with the public, including irate persons in a clam and professional manner.
  • Ability to resolve situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, twist, push, pull, climb, kneel, crawl, hear and see clearly with or without corrective lenses/glasses.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, unassisted.
  • Ability to work in environments that may include hazardous conditions, walking in dense vegetation and exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required PPE to include safety eyewear, footwear, head protection or hearing protection.
  • Ability to work overtime or a different shift when needed.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to meet and maintain driver eligibility standards detailed in the COA Driver Safety Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Natural Resources Management, Rangeland Management, Wildlife Biology, Law Enforcement, or a related field, plus two (2) years of related experience.
  • Related experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • May require a Texas non-commercial Pesticide Applicators License or be capable of obtaining one within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must carry and maintain a valid Texas State Hunting License.
  • Current Texas Class "C" Driver's License.
