Fitness/Safety Specialist I

Purpose:
 

Under supervision, supports the physical fitness program for the department by assisting with conducting physical fitness assessments and assisting in the development of personal fitness programs for staff personnel in Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services Departments.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Assists in providing fitness assessments, including nutrition counseling, to field personnel.
  2. Assists in the implementation of fitness programs for the department and assists command/management in marketing Wellness and Fitness programs.
  3. Administers and interprets lifestyle questionnaires and develops personal fitness programs based on findings.
  4. Monitors flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, aerobic capacity, and other pertinent factors of field personnel.
  5. Maintains medical files, including scheduling appointments for physician.
  6. Orders supplies for division.
  7. Performs anthropometrical (girth) measurements.
  8. Classifies employees according to Coopers Clinic statistics.
  9. Assists in developing and correlating employee outcomes using a target scoreboard.
  10. Works personally with individuals who demonstrated weakness in one or more areas in the assessment, in an effort to assist such individuals to overall health and wellness, including working directly with return to duty employees as it pertains to fitness rehabilitation.
  11. Assists in the development of training materials and other strategies to educate and update department on wellness and fitness issues.
  12. Assists in maintaining a database on program participants to detect trends in wellness and fitness and develops statistics on natural history from beginning to end of career.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of athletic training, nutrition for performance, physical fitness assessment, and exercise programming.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of database management.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in conducting cardiovascular capacity, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition assessments.
  • Skill in consulting with employees and recommending fitness programs.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Exercise Physiology or in a related field.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.

  None.
