Department Mission
Austin Public Health (APH) strives to prevent disease, promote health, and protect the well-being of the community. The role of public health is to promote community welfare and self-sufficiency, and to protect the community from infectious diseases, epidemics, and environmental or social hazards. To achieve these goals, Austin Public Health provides a range of programs and services that support healthy behaviors, prevent diseases, provide food protection, offer lifesaving immunizations, prepare, and respond to public health emergencies, and help people navigate through crises.

- One epidemiologist per 100,000 population employed by Austin Public Health
- Percent of black women enrolled in WIC during pregnancy who are actively participating in WIC who subsequently breastfeed their children.
- Percent of clients supported through APH, including through community-based preventative health screenings, who follow through with referrals
- Percent of employees who have completed public health emergency preparedness training
- Percent of newly diagnosed HIV patients linked to HIV-related medical care
- Percentage of retail and food service fixed establishment routine inspections that are substantially compliant
